THE AFRICA TIMES | LIBYA — The grain import requirements for Libya are anticipated to rise to approximately 3.3 million metric tons during the 2026/27 marketing season. This figure represents a 7% increase over the average, as drought conditions continue to diminish domestic production. Libya remains heavily reliant on overseas supplies, as outlined by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Impact of Drought on Production
The FAO indicated that Libya’s winter wheat and barley harvest is expected to conclude by the end of July. However, inadequate rainfall during October and November of 2025 significantly reduced the area planted across much of the country, thereby impacting overall crop production.
Regional Disparities in Rainfall
