JUBA — United Nations human rights experts have issued a stark warning regarding the unfavorable conditions for peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections in South Sudan. They cited ongoing violence, political tensions, and limitations on civic and political freedoms.
This warning arises as South Sudan gears up for its general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026, with only four months left before the polls.
Concerns Over Election Viability
During a press conference in Juba following a four-day visit to the country, Commissioner Barney Afako expressed concerns that the upcoming elections are increasingly at risk due to escalating violence and reduced civic space.
“Even as the country heads for elections, political and civic space has narrowed, while many of the safeguards and conditions for peaceful and credible polls are still missing,” Afako stated.
