Demand for Inclusion of Women with Disabilities in South Sudan Elections
THE AFRICA TIMES | SOUTH SUDAN — Rights organizations have urged South Sudan’s electoral authorities and political stakeholders to facilitate the meaningful inclusion of women with disabilities in the forthcoming general elections. They argue that persistent barriers hinder these individuals from exercising their political rights.
Underrepresentation and Constitutional Guarantees
The appeal was made during a public engagement with the Political Parties Council. Representatives emphasized that despite constitutional guarantees of equality and non-discrimination, women with disabilities remain significantly underrepresented in political leadership and decision-making roles.
Disability rights activist Catherine Ascencio articulated that inclusive elections are critical for fostering democracy, peace, and equality in South Sudan. Many women with disabilities face challenges accessing political meetings, voter education programs, and leadership opportunities due to discrimination and inaccessible public spaces.
