South Sudan Defends Inclusion of Abyei in Upcoming Elections
JUBA — South Sudan has firmly defended its decision to include residents of the disputed Abyei region in the general elections scheduled for December 22. This stance comes in response to objections raised by Sudan, which the South Sudanese government claims is inconsistent with existing legal frameworks.
Rejection of Sudan’s Objections
In a statement released on Friday, Agok Anyar Madut, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, addressed Sudan’s recent protests. Khartoum asserts that the inclusion of Abyei residents violates the 2005 Abyei Protocol under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and other agreements between the two nations.
