The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) have taken control of the Heglig oil fields. This follows clashes within Sudan that spilled across the border.
Ateny Wek Ateny, government spokesperson and Minister of Information, confirmed this development.
SSPDF Assumes Security Responsibility
The SSPDF now holds full security responsibility for the Heglig (Panthou) oil fields. This action follows military clashes in Sudan that extended into South Sudan.
Ateny stated that the clashes involved the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The fighting led to the defeat of the SAF, with some soldiers fleeing into South Sudan.
SAF Soldiers Surrender
SAF units, led by Brig. Tariq Mokhtar, entered the Panakuach area of Unity State. These soldiers surrendered their weapons to the SSPDF, complying with international law, according to Ateny. The soldiers are being prepared to return to Sudan.
Tripartite Agreement Reached
A tripartite agreement was established between the SSPDF, SAF, and RSF. It grants the SSPDF primary security control over the Heglig oil fields. The Heglig oil fields are a strategic site contested in the Sudanese conflict.
Diplomatic Intervention
President Salva Kiir intervened by speaking with Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. He sought to de-escalate tensions, aiming to prevent conflict from reaching the oil-rich region.
Ateny emphasized the President’s desire to protect the oil fields from the ongoing war. RSF forces have since retreated northward. This allows South Sudan to secure the area.
Mysterious Drone Strike
Ateny reported that an unidentified drone struck the area. The strike resulted in the deaths of seven SSPDF soldiers guarding the border and oil installations. Six of the soldiers have been identified. The seventh was burned beyond recognition.
The families of the deceased soldiers will be informed. Their names will be released to the media subsequently.
Call for Calm and Caution Against Misinformation
Communities in Bentiu, Pan Akuach, and the Ruweng Administrative Area are urged to remain calm. The recent agreement aims to prevent further fighting near the border and oil fields.
Ateny cautioned against misinformation on social media, appealing to journalists to verify information. He highlighted the misuse of social media platforms for spreading unfounded and inciting news.
South Sudan’s Stance on Sudan War
South Sudan reiterated its call for a diplomatic resolution to Sudan’s war. Renewed hostilities continue to displace civilians. The conflict also impacts South Sudanese communities hosting those fleeing the violence.
