THE AFRICA TIMES | MOROCCO —
Rabat – US President Donald Trump has launched a new immigration program. This program allows wealthy foreigners to purchase a fast-track US residency card for $1 million. The card is called the “Trump Gold Card”.
A more exclusive “Platinum Card” costing $5 million is also planned.
New Residency Program Details
According to the US government website, applicants must pay a $15,000 processing fee. They also need to pass background checks and transfer $1 million. Residency will then be granted “in record time.”
Trump stated the program creates “a direct path to citizenship for all qualified and vetted people.” Businesses can also sponsor employees through this program.
Businesses sponsoring employees must pay $2 million. Additional annual fees will also apply. Companies must pay a 1% yearly maintenance fee. A 5% transfer fee is required each time they assign the visa to a different employee.
Platinum Card Specifics
The Platinum Card will cost $5 million. The card is “coming soon” according to officials. It allows holders to stay in the US up to 270 days a year.
Holders will not pay US taxes on income earned outside the country.
Trump stated the generated money will fund positive contributions. He predicts the program will bring in “many billions of dollars.”
Rationale Behind the Program
The Trump administration claims the new visas will attract wealthy investors. They also believe it will attract top global talent. Officials state it brings in major revenue for the US.
Officials describe it as a strategy to “keep invaluable talent”. This program gives companies easier access to highly skilled workers.
The program is part of Trump’s controversial immigration strategy. This includes strict enforcement for undocumented immigrants. It also opens doors for wealthy newcomers able to pay.
Trump has argued these programs bring financial benefits to the US. This makes the country more competitive. He cites nations like New Zealand, Portugal, and the UAE as examples. These countries already offer similar visas.
Controversy and Debate
The Gold Card has sparked strong criticism from various groups. Immigration rights groups disagree with the premise. They say it contradicts America’s image as a welcoming nation.
Critics warn it turns US residency into a product for sale. This creates a two-tier immigration system. The system would favor the wealthy.
Supporters argue that many countries already have similar programs. They believe the US should not fall behind. They argue the revenue can fund government projects and reduce the burden on taxpayers.
