Knesset Approves Death Penalty for Palestinians: An Overview
Israel’s Knesset has passed a law approving the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks. The move has sparked concerns and warnings of increased tensions in the region. While the death penalty was already legal, it was rarely used, with only two executions in Israel’s history.
The Scope of the New Legislation
Previously, the death penalty applied to Israeli citizens, Jewish or Palestinian Arab, only in cases threatening the state’s existence. The new bill targets Palestinians convicted of killing Israeli citizens making capital punishment the default. This law will primarily affect the military court system overseeing cases in the occupied West Bank.
Human rights groups have criticized the legislation as discriminatory and a violation of international law. They claim that the law specifically targets Palestinians and exempts Israeli extremists committing similar crimes
