THE AFRICA TIMES | SUDAN — Indonesia plans to construct a replica of Balla Lompoa in Cape Town, South Africa. This project aims to promote Indonesian culture and strengthen historical links.

Cultural Diplomacy Initiative

The Ministry of Culture confirmed the initiative’s target implementation for 2025 or 2026. Antara News reported the upcoming construction. Endah Renoastuti is the ministry’s Director General. She stated the timing strategically aligns with significant events.

Strategic Timing

South Africa holds the G20 presidency this year. Next year marks the 400th anniversary of Sheikh Yusuf’s birth. These dates provide a crucial context for the project’s launch.

Purpose and Collaboration

The replica palace will serve as a cultural showcase. It will also function as a connection point for the Indonesian diaspora. The ministry is prepared to collaborate with private partners. This collaboration will occur through the Indonesian Heritage Agency. The agency oversees museums and cultural heritage endeavors.

Local Support

Gowa District Head Sitti Husniah Talenrang welcomed the plan. She emphasized the palace’s symbolic importance. It represents heritage for descendants of the Gowa diaspora. The replica is more than just architecture.
