The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been quietly shut down. This Elon Musk-backed project began during President Donald Trump’s second term. The initiative aimed to slash bureaucracy and overhaul federal technology.
The closure occurred months before its original July 2026 end date. Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor confirmed the agency’s inactivity.
When asked about DOGE’s status, Kupor stated, “That doesn’t exist.” He added that the project no longer functions as a centralized body. These comments mark the first official acknowledgement of DOGE’s dissolution.
Created via an executive order, DOGE began with sweeping changes. These included budget cuts across departments and the elimination of positions. It also gained significant authority over federal tech systems.
Initial Ambitions and Criticisms
Musk promoted DOGE as a “chainsaw for bureaucracy.” Supporters hailed it as a modernization effort, but critics cited overreach. Despite its bold start, DOGE’s claims lacked independent verification.
The initiative touted billions in savings without detailed public accounting. As months passed, watchdogs questioned its operations. Protests accused Musk and the administration of consolidating control.
The Unraveling of DOGE

Tensions escalated after Musk’s split with Trump. This led to staff departures and fractures within the agency. Legal challenges surrounding DOGE’s data access also intensified.

Behind the scenes, federal agencies absorbed DOGE’s workload. The Office of Personnel Management has now taken over key responsibilities. A hiring freeze tied to DOGE has also been lifted.
Transition and Reassignment
Many former DOGE officials have transitioned into new roles. Some now hold senior positions in various departments. These include Health and Human Services and the State Department.
Joe Gebbia, who helped design DOGE’s strategy, now leads a National Design Studio. This studio modernizes federal websites. The move signals an attempt to stabilize operations disrupted by restructuring.
