THE AFRICA TIMES | SUDAN — Ethiopia is renewing its push to join the World Trade Organization (WTO). Officials signal revived impetus in the nation’s protracted membership pursuit.
Ethiopia’s WTO Accession Efforts
State Minister Hadera Abera met with Maika Oshikawa, Director of the WTO’s Accessions Division. The meeting occurred during the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama. Discussions centered on Ethiopia’s accession roadmap.
The talks emphasized advancements in bilateral negotiations. Sustained dialogue with key partners remained crucial. Hadera reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to finalizing market access. He also highlighted the government’s economic reform agenda, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Requests for Support and WTO Response
Ethiopia requested enhanced technical and institutional support from the WTO Secretariat. Oshikawa reportedly praised Ethiopia’s dedication. The Secretariat pledged to provide the necessary backing for entry.
Challenges and Potential Impact
Addis Ababa has reiterated its determination to join the WTO. However, the process has been delayed for decades. Structural economic challenges and domestic instability posed obstacles. Slow reforms further hampered progress.
Confirmation from the WTO regarding these discussions remains pending. If achieved, Ethiopia’s accession would represent a significant integration of a populous African nation into the global economy.
