THE AFRICA TIMES | SOUTH SUDAN — A senior United States official has expressed skepticism regarding the credibility of South Sudan’s peace process. The official characterized claims of meaningful dialogue as “farcical,” especially in light of First Vice President Riek Machar’s arrest and ongoing trial.
Concerns Regarding Peace Process
On Monday, the U.S. Embassy in South Sudan released a statement detailing Africa Bureau Senior Bureau Official Nick Checker’s visit to Juba from May 7 to 8. During this visit, he held discussions with high-ranking South Sudanese government officials.
Checker’s agenda included key U.S. priorities such as promoting peace and stability, reducing dependence on long-term aid, and addressing what he termed “predatory practices” affecting humanitarian organizations. Additionally, he focused on immigration and border security matters.
