Government Denies Political Detention Claims
Michael Makuei Lueth, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, has asserted the legitimacy of the continued detention of opposition politicians and military officials linked to the SPLM/A-IO. He contends that they are criminal suspects facing trial rather than political prisoners.
During a press conference on May 11, Makuei defended the government’s stance while presenting proposed amendments to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), the fragile peace deal aimed at resolving years of civil strife.
Misinterpretations by Regional and International Actors
Makuei criticized various regional organizations and international institutions for what he described as incorrect interpretations of the situation in South Sudan. He indicated that many have called for the release of detained opposition
