International Pressure on South Sudan’s Government
A coalition of 17 Western embassies and the European Union has exerted pressure on President Salva Kiir’s administration. They seek the reversal of controversial amendments to the country’s peace agreement and advocate for immediate dialogue with all signatories. This call comes at a time of escalating tensions within South Sudan’s fragile unity government.
Concerns Over the Peace Agreement
In a joint statement issued on May 19, the diplomatic missions warned that unilateral changes to the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) could undermine the transitional government’s legitimacy. Such actions also jeopardize prospects for achieving lasting peace in the region.
