Support for Arms Embargo in South Sudan
A faction of South Sudan’s National Democratic Movement (NDM) has expressed its support for the renewal of the United Nations arms embargo. The group contends that ongoing militarization of politics and widespread insecurity substantiate the need for these restrictions.
This declaration follows the U.N. Security Council’s decision to extend sanctions on South Sudan for an additional year, which include an arms embargo, travel bans, and asset freezes. Initially imposed in 2015, the sanctions regime was expanded in 2018 due to escalating conflicts and humanitarian concerns during the civil war.
