THE AFRICA TIMES | KENYA —
The Coast Development Authority (CDA) has inaugurated the rehabilitated Mwache Dam in Mwanda, Taita Taveta County. The Sh20 million project aims to transform water access for over 300 households.
The project was completed four months ahead of schedule.
Commissioning Ceremony and Key Statements
CDA Board Chairman Mzee Mwinyi Mzee acknowledged President William Ruto’s support during the commissioning. He also thanked the Ministry of ASALs and Regional Development.
Mzee Mwinyi commended the board’s leadership, the contractor’s efficiency, and resident cooperation. These factors ensured the project’s timely completion.
Future Expansion and Funding Needs
Mzee Mwinyi acknowledged the need for additional funding to expand water access downstream. He highlighted the importance of similar projects in Mwanda to enhance food security.
These efforts align with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Increased Dam Capacity and Water Usage
CDA Acting Managing Director Dr Mwana Siti Bendera confirmed that the de-siltation project increased the dam’s capacity. The capacity has risen to 10,000 cubic metres thanks to government funding.
Dr. Bendera stated that the water would support household use, animal watering, and irrigation. It will also supply nearby schools and government offices.
Praise for Project Completion
Dr Bendera commended the contractor, engineers, and supervisors for their efficiency. The project finished well ahead of the initial June 2026 deadline.
She expressed gratitude for the backing from the government, board, and citizens.
Parliamentary Support and Future Initiatives
Wundanyi MP Daniel Mwashako praised CDA’s work and pledged continued support. He promised backing from the Coast Parliamentary Group.
Mwashako urged the government to increase CDA’s funding for similar projects. He emphasized the Authority’s crucial role in regional development.
Expanding Water Access to Njavuli
Mwashako advocated for including residents from Njavuli sub-location in the project’s benefits. He proposed using solar heaters and generators to pump water to additional households.
He revealed plans to expand coverage to 600-800 more households upon securing further funding.
Mwashako urged CDA to conduct a feasibility study for extending the water supply. The study would determine the costs for extending the water supply to Njavuli and Marungu.
