THE AFRICA TIMES | KENYA —
The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has embarked on digital registration of all engineering Projects. This initiative aims to bolster professionalism within the sector.
EBK’s Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Margaret Ogai, announced the creation of the Engineers Project Registration Portal. Practitioners can now register projects and acquire a unique number before submitting drawings to the county.
Collaboration for Project Oversight
The EBK has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Construction Authority (NCA). The Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS) is also a signatory.
This collaborative effort seeks to ensure adequate design and supervision of all projects nationwide. It is designed to enhance information exchange regarding building design and supervision.
Eng. Ogai spoke at the Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya (ACEK) Annual Dinner in Nairobi. The event, dubbed ‘Celebrating Engineers’ Contributions through Memoirs and Publications,’ highlighted the profession’s impact.
Addressing Private Developer Concerns
Eng. Ogai cautioned private developers against failing to meet established standards. She accused some of taking shortcuts during building construction.

According to Eng. Ogai, issues often arise with smaller private projects. These developers may not employ registered engineers for design work.
She further noted that many private projects lack necessary approvals and valid permits. The National Construction Authourity (NCA) is responsible for providing these approvals.
ACEK’s Perspective and Initiatives
Eng. Jane Mutulili, ACEK President, emphasized the need for consultancy services from both government and private sectors. These services are crucial for preparation and design on infrastructure projects.
According to Eng. Mutulili, designs done by consulting engineers ensure safety. She added these designs also uphold resilience and longevity.
ACEK reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the government’s affordable housing program. The organization also strives to support engineering education.
Mentorship and Training Programs
Mike Jomo, ACEK Future Leaders Chairperson, detailed ongoing mentorship programs. These programs encourage youth to specialize in STEM fields (Sciences, Technology, engineering, and Mathematics).
ACEK Future Leaders conducts training for upcoming engineers. This training seeks to enhance skills within the engineering sector.
