Political Turmoil in South Sudan
THE AFRICA TIMES | SOUTH SUDAN — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO), led by suspended First Vice President Riek Machar, recently disowned the registration of the ‘IO Party’ by the Political Parties Council. This development has exacerbated existing internal divisions within the group.
A breakaway faction of the SPLM-IO, led by Peacebuilding Minister Stephen Par Kuol, effectively moved to replace Machar as chairperson on April 9, 2025. This faction was registered as the IO Party after officially dropping the SPLM-IO name.
Registration Announcement
The Political Parties Council (PPC), responsible for the registration and regulation of political parties, announced this registration in Juba. Eng. Joseph Malwal Dong, Focal Person of the SPLM
