THE AFRICA TIMES | SOUTH SUDAN — The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has raised concerns over a financial crisis within the United Nations, which hampers its ability to maintain essential peacekeeping and civilian protection operations in South Sudan. This warning comes at a time when the country faces increasing insecurity and humanitarian needs.
Significance of UNMISS Operations
During the United Nations Day celebrations in Juba, Anita Kiki Gbeho, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of UNMISS, asserted that the mission plays a crucial role in safeguarding vulnerable communities amid escalating operational challenges.
Gbeho emphasized the dedication of peacekeepers, stating, “Our peacekeepers are doing their utmost to support those in need through efforts that are saving and changing lives for the better.” She noted that the mission actively responds to rising humanitarian and security challenges across the nation.
