THE AFRICA TIMES | KENYA — Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki is advocating for revenue sharing. Njuki wants national government partnerships with counties bordering national parks. The aim is to financially benefit local communities.
Call for Revenue Sharing
Njuki referenced existing agreements between the government and Kajiado and Narok counties. These agreements relate to Amboseli and Maasai Mara parks.
Aligned with this year’s Jamhuri Day theme, Njuki emphasized the economic importance of tourism. He noted the need for counties bordering parks to benefit from tourism revenues. These counties often maintain key tourism sites without adequate financial return.
Conservation and Community Benefits
Speaking at Kajiunduthi stadium, Njuki urged residents to conserve tourism resources. He continues to champion his message of revenue sharing.
Njuki stated that the deals with Narok and Kajiado counties have increased revenue collection. This has resulted in improved living standards for residents.
Crackdown on Illegal Logging
Njuki and County Commissioner David Gitonga issued a warning regarding illegal logging. They cautioned that individuals logging indigenous trees risk destroying the ecosystem and will face consequences.
Furthermore, they emphasized the importance of conserving forests. These forests are home to the rare pancake tortoise.
