TORIT – Over two thousand former Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) members have joined the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) in Torit. This defection marks a significant shift in Eastern Equatoria State.
The defectors included officers, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers.
Defection and Integration
The SSPDF formally received the defecting forces at Division 7 Headquarters on Friday. The Division Commander praised the group’s decision as both courageous and timely.
The commander, Gen. Moses, stated the defection occurs as safeguarding lives is a priority. He urged the new members to reject tribalism and hate speech.
Call for Unity and Service
Gen. Moses encouraged the integrated members to serve with integrity. He also appealed to them to persuade others in the bush to embrace peace.
Maj. Gen. Dr. Koboss Milton read the group’s declaration of allegiance. He expressed gratitude for the warm welcome from the SSPDF and Eastern Equatoria State.
Reasons for Defection
Maj. Gen. Koboss stated that the November 18 events in Torit deeply affected communities. These events contributed to their decision to abandon conflict and prioritize peacebuilding.
The move followed months of reflection and frustration with the SPLA-IO leadership. Maj. Gen. Koboss criticized what he described as misleading narratives about reform.
Accusations of Nepotism
Maj. Gen. Koboss claimed that nepotism within the SPLA-IO had worsened. Allegedly, leadership roles were increasingly concentrated within specific families.
He also accused the SPLA-IO leadership of favoring officers in the diaspora. This allegedly marginalized those serving inside South Sudan.
Desire for Peace
Maj. Gen. Koboss stated that the defectors assessed the situation carefully. They concluded that returning to the government aligned with peace efforts.
He emphasized their return reflects a collective desire to end conflict and foster stability. He said it shows their commitment to working toward a more peaceful future.
Reactions and Implications
The SSPDF views the defection as a significant boost to peace initiatives. The SPLA-IO leadership has not yet issued an official response to the defection.
