THE AFRICA TIMES | MOROCCO — Morocco plans to invest 15 billion dirhams ($1.55 billion) in Casablanca’s airport. The expansion aims to triple passenger capacity before the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The airports authority (ONDA) announced the new terminal project Thursday. It will serve as a key African hub. Airport Expansion Details This expansion is part of a larger national strategy for airport capacity. Morocco aims to double its capacity to 78 million passengers. The nation prepares to co-host the World Cup with Spain and Portugal. The revamped Casablanca airport will hold 35 million travelers each year by 2029. Current Capacity The current capacity is 10.5 million. This expansion marks a large increase. The airport expansion directly supports growing tourism demand. Infrastructure Integration The new terminal will integrate into a high-speed rail network. The rail line connects Kenitra and Marrakech. Its connection to the airport should enhance accessibility and efficiency. The rail project has been announced separately. Integration will improve transport infrastructure. Tourism and Aviation Growth Morocco saw 17.4 million visitors in 2023. This number is a 20% increase from the prior year. The country aims for 26 million visitors by 2030. Royal Air Maroc (RAM) plans to quadruple its fleet to 200 aircraft by 2037. Morocco aims to be a major aviation and tourism hub.
