THE AFRICA TIMES | TANZANIA — Tanzania has launched a Sh6.3 trillion ($2.4 billion) Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project. This initiative aims to enhance transport connectivity with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Burundi. The project is expected to significantly boost regional trade and position Tanzania as a key logistics hub for East and Central Africa.
Project Objectives
The new railway is designed to improve the movement of passengers and freight. In doing so, it will reduce transportation and logistics costs, while strengthening the role of the Port of Dar es Salaam as a strategic gateway for landlocked countries in the region.
Officials indicate that the railway will create thousands of jobs during both construction and operation. Furthermore, it is anticipated to attract new investments in transport, logistics, and related industries.
