THE AFRICA TIMES | MOROCCO —
Morocco’s Interior Ministry has announced the opening of voter registration for the 2026 electoral lists.
The ministry stated that the registration process is open until December 31. This announcement is part of the annual revision of general electoral lists for 2026.
Voter Registration Details
The ministry urges all unregistered citizens meeting legal requirements to register. To be eligible, citizens must be at least 18 years old. Those turning 18 by March 31, 2026, can also register.
Eligible citizens can apply online through www.listeselectorales.ma. Alternatively, applications can be filed with local administrative authorities.
Residence Changes
Citizens who have changed residences must request a registration transfer. This transfer should be to the electoral list of their new commune or district by the deadline. Previously registered citizens moving within the same commune must also notify the authorities.
Background on the Electoral Process
In August, the Interior Ministry held meetings with political party leaders to discuss the electoral process. The meetings followed King Mohammed VI’s Throne Speech, announcing that the next elections would occur on the regular constitutional schedule.
King Mohammed VI instructed the Minister of Interior to properly prepare for the upcoming elections. The King also requested opening political consultations with various stakeholders.
Political Parties Prepare for Elections
Political parties, including the opposition, are preparing for new elections next year. Last month, Abdelilah Benkirane, leader of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), expressed confidence in his party’s regained position.
Benkirane believes “fair” elections will reflect the party’s efforts. Even if not, the party will fulfill its duty through persistence and engagement.
Previous Election Results
The PJD experienced a loss, securing a few seats after holding 125 seats following the 2016 elections. In the 2021 elections, the PJD secured 13 seats.
The National Rally of Independents won 102 seats; the Authenticity and Modernity Party won 86. These parties now form the government coalition, with the Istiqlal party in third place.
