PORT SUDAN – The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of violating a declared ceasefire. According to the SAF, the RSF continues its attacks on Babanusa, a key military hub in West Kordofan. The RSF gained control of Babanusa earlier this week.

SAF Accuses RSF of Ceasefire Violations

The SAF spokesperson released a statement regarding the RSF’s actions. The statement alleges that RSF fighters shelled Babanusa with artillery. It also claims that the RSF attacked the town with strategic drones, despite announcing a ceasefire.

The army reported that a fresh assault on Babanusa occurred on Monday. The SAF claims its forces successfully repelled this attack. The army characterized the RSF ceasefire as a deceptive maneuver.

Accusations of External Support

The SAF alleges that the RSF announcement is a “political and media maneuver.” They state it is designed to conceal ongoing battlefield movements. The SAF further alleges the RSF receives external military support.

The SAF has accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of supporting the RSF. The UAE has previously denied these allegations. The SAF insists the ceasefire is a ploy to mask military operations fueled by Emirati support.

Commitment to Humanitarian Law

The Sudanese army affirmed its commitment to international humanitarian law. It also stated it is committed to protecting civilians and facilitating humanitarian work. However, the army emphasized that it would prevent the exploitation of humanitarian conditions.

The SAF reiterated that it will not allow the humanitarian situation to be used as cover. It asserted it will not allow it be used for military movements worsening the crisis. These comments follow the RSF’s recent capture of a key military headquarters.

RSF Gains Ground Amidst Truce Rejection

The RSF seized control of the 22nd Infantry Division headquarters in Babanusa. This occurred after a siege lasting over two years. This represents a significant battlefield reversal for the army in West Kordofan during the conflict.

The RSF’s unilateral ceasefire announcement followed the military’s rejection of a US-backed truce proposal. Despite the announced ceasefire, fighting continues across several fronts. These fronts are located in western and central Sudan.
