Morocco: Ex-Spain Leader’s Call for War Stuns

THE AFRICA TIMES | MOROCCO —

Pablo Iglesias Turrión, a co-founder of Spain’s Podemos party, has recently advocated for armed conflict against Morocco. These comments follow a political trajectory marked by ambition and controversy. Iglesias’s journey has ultimately led to a significant downfall.

The Rise and Fall of Pablo Iglesias

Emergence on the Political Scene

Iglesias entered Spanish politics in 2014, propelled by the Indignados movement. He presented himself as a clean alternative to Spain’s political establishment. His party, Podemos, pledged to eliminate corruption.

However, a different reality emerged, challenging his revolutionary claims.

Advocacy for the Polisario Front

Iglesias fervently supported the Polisario Front from the beginning. Podemos’s platform called for enhanced diplomatic relations with the SADR. He became the Polisario’s most vocal advocate in Spain.

Iglesias organized rallies displaying Polisario flags and accused Morocco of colonialism. He also criticized Spain’s government as treasonous.

Scandal and Downfall

His rise reached its zenith in 2020 when he was appointed deputy prime minister. He attempted to arrange a meeting with a Polisario representative. Prime Minister Sánchez intervened, halting this initiative.

A financial scandal, separate from political disagreements, caused Iglesias’s downfall. An investigation exposed alleged illegal financing and money laundering.

Reports revealed a “black fund” that diverted money to benefit Iglesias’s associates. The “Neurona affair” further implicated Podemos in a scheme. Campaign funds were allegedly funneled to Latin American networks.

Several Podemos officials were implicated, but Iglesias avoided prosecution. The Madrid regional elections in May 2021 resulted in a Podemos defeat. Iglesias subsequently withdrew from politics.

Recent Provocations and Reactions

Calls for Armed Struggle

Iglesias currently hosts “La Base,” focusing on the Polisario and its conflict with Morocco. He recently called for armed struggle against Morocco. He argues that the Polisario Front has no alternative.

Many perceive his statements as inciting terrorism. These remarks are concerning, considering his past role as Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister.

Implications for Spanish-Moroccan Relations

Relations between Spain and Morocco have improved in recent years. It remains to be seen how the Spanish government will respond to his comments.

Iglesias has consistently attacked Morocco with inflammatory rhetoric throughout his career. He accuses Morocco of “colonialism” and denounces it as a dictatorship.

He accuses the Spanish government of “historical betrayal” and urges Spaniards to rise against their government for befriending Morocco.

Ultimately, Iglesias’s calls for war on Morocco appear to be a desperate attempt to remain relevant.
