Bobi Wine: 2026 Presidential Bid Announced

THE AFRICA TIMES | UGANDA — Bobi Wine Declares Presidential Bid for 2026 Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, has announced his intention to challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the 2026 general elections. This announcement signals a renewed political confrontation in the East African nation. Wine voiced his decision from Nairobi, emphasizing that his candidacy serves as a broader strategy. He aims to expose what he perceives as increasing authoritarianism within Uganda. Political Strategy and Allegations of Authoritarianism Wine stated, “Participation in the election will also be a fighting opportunity.” He intends “to further undress and expose the regime and to galvanise Ugandans to rise up and free themselves.” In the 2021 election, Wine finished second but rejected the results. He cited electoral fraud, ballot stuffing, and intimidation by security forces as reasons for his rejection. Criticism of Western Governments Wine criticized Western governments for what he views as a muted response to human rights abuses. These abuses allegedly include torture, illegal detentions, and abductions of his supporters. “Some leaders in the West are complicit in our suffering,” Wine stated. He believes they prioritize business deals over human rights concerns. Human Rights Concerns and Allegations of Torture Uganda, a regional security partner for Western governments, has faced increased scrutiny regarding its human rights record. Recent reports suggest that Eddie Mutwe, a key figure in Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP), was tortured during detention. Justice Minister Norbert Mao acknowledged allegations of abuse against Mutwe. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni’s son, claimed responsibility for holding Mutwe and using him as a “punching bag.” Details of Mutwe’s Detention Mutwe, who had been missing for a week, appeared in court on charges of robbery. Wine reported that Mutwe disclosed being electrocuted, waterboarded, and severely beaten while detained. As of the time of publication, efforts to get comments from Uganda’s police and defense officials were unsuccessful. Wine’s Platform and Priorities Wine outlined his priorities if elected, including civil liberties and political freedoms. He also stated he would launch a full-scale anti-corruption campaign. His administration, he said, would work to restore civil liberties to the people.
