Sudan Appoints New PM Amid Conflict

THE AFRICA TIMES | SUDAN — Appointment of New Prime Minister Sudan’s military leader, General Abdel Fattah Burhan, has appointed Kamil Idris as prime minister. This marks the first premier since the 2021 military coup. The coup toppled the civilian administration. Idris, a former United Nations official, was announced on Monday. Sudan is currently embroiled in conflict. The conflict involves the national army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Uncertainty Surrounds New Role The extent of Idris’ authority remains uncertain. The military struggles to control intensified RSF attacks. These attacks include drone strikes on Port Sudan. Idris assumes office weeks after Burhan named Dafallah al-Haj Ali as acting prime minister. This appeared symbolic, never materializing into a functioning government. Additional Appointments to Sovereign Council Burhan also made additional appointments on Monday. He reinstated Salma Abdel Jabbar Almubarak. Nowara Abo Mohamed Mohamed Tahir joined the Sovereign Council. The Sovereign Council is Sudan’s top governing body under military control. The army previously indicated plans for a civilian-led government. This followed its claimed takeover of Khartoum from RSF. Background of the Conflict Sudan descended into war in April 2023. This occurred after a power-sharing breakdown. The breakdown was between the army and the RSF. Both armies had jointly orchestrated the 2021 coup. The coup interrupted Sudan’s path to democratic governance. This governance was fragile after the fall of Omar al-Bashir.
