X Exposes Foreign Interference Targeting Morocco

THE AFRICA TIMES | MOROCCO —

X (formerly Twitter) activated a new feature last Friday. This feature displays the country of origin for user accounts. The move exposed foreign entities targeting Morocco through hostile accounts.

The transparency tool revealed many accounts operate from Algeria and Canada. Other accounts trace back to various Arab countries. Some of these nations publicly claim friendship with Morocco.

Posts showed screenshots revealing the account’s origin. These accounts had claimed to be Moroccan.

X’s Head of Product expressed interest in helping users verify content authenticity. However, the feature revealed that many accounts damaging Morocco’s reputation are run from abroad.

This feature unmasked numerous pages pretending to operate inside Morocco. Previously, determining a user’s location required complex technical tools.

Experts note that intelligence insights have indicated the presence of foreign entities working to create digital disruptions inside Morocco.

These groups manipulate engagement on specific topics. This pushes topics into trending sections through fake accounts. These tactics shifted from Facebook to X after Facebook’s location-verification tightened.

Foreign Interference Uncovered

Accounts Originating Outside Morocco

The new feature revealed that anti-Morocco accounts operate from Algeria, other Arab countries, and Canada.

Several individuals wanted by Moroccan authorities reside in Canada. Some operate under their real identities. Others hide behind anonymous accounts.

Motives and Coordination

These individuals play roles ranging from executing funded agendas to securing residency benefits. They receive these benefits in exchange for serving certain entities.

These foreign entities run accounts in a coordinated manner. They operate outside Morocco, suggesting a directed plan. Their goal is to incite chaos and destabilize the country internally.
