Majok-Yith-Thiou, South Sudan is experiencing a surge in returnees. Authorities report that approximately 300 individuals have arrived from Sudan since last week. The influx strains local resources as humanitarian needs escalate.

Influx of Returnees from Sudan

Andrea Akok Lual, the municipal mayor, confirmed the arrival of returnees. These individuals are entering South Sudan via the Merram road. Local authorities and international organizations are coordinating the reception.

The mayor characterized the situation as “catastrophic.” Returnees reportedly fled the conflict in Sudan. They arrived in South Sudan without essential belongings, facing dire circumstances.

Humanitarian Response

Humanitarian agencies are actively involved. ACTED and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are registering returnees. These agencies are facilitating integration with host communities in the area.

Sudanese nationals among the returnees receive targeted assistance. These individuals are being relocated to Wedwiel Refugee Settlement. The relocation ensures access to specialized support and resources.

Strained Resources and Environmental Challenges

Majok-Yith-Thiou faces significant challenges, despite the residents’ efforts. The town struggles to support the growing population with limited resources. Moreover, worsening environmental conditions compound the existing hardships.

A severe millipede infestation has devastated local crops. This crisis, combined with drought, has exacerbated food insecurity. People now resort to desperate measures to survive. They uproot groundnuts or seek work on other farms for sustenance.

Sanitation Concerns and Health Risks

The mayor also highlighted concerns about deteriorating sanitation. The absence of public latrines poses a significant health risk. Open defecation increases the potential for disease outbreaks in the area.

An appeal has been made to health organizations. They are urged to raise awareness about sanitation practices. Support for the construction of pit latrines is crucial. These measures are vital to prevent disease and protect public health.

Historical Significance and Current Disruptions

Majok-Yith-Thiou has historically been a vital commercial hub. It has facilitated trade and movement between South Sudan and Sudan. However, the ongoing conflict in Sudan has disrupted cross-border trade. The conflict has increased the flow of displaced populations seeking refuge.
