THE AFRICA TIMES | SOUTH SUDAN —
JUBA – A South Sudanese lawmaker, Luka Mathen Toukpiny Luk, was fatally shot. The incident occurred at his residence in Juba on Tuesday night. This event has heightened concerns about the security of public officials.
Details of the Attack
Luka Mathen Toukpiny Luk represented Cueibet County of Lakes State. He served in the Council of States. Gunmen attacked his home around 10:00 p.m. in the Gudele neighborhood.
Reports indicate he was shot inside his compound. This occurred shortly after he returned from prayer. He died an hour later at a nearby hospital.
Investigation and Arrests
His wife, Nyan Akolde, reported that authorities have arrested two suspects. Two others remain at large. Security forces are actively investigating the attack.
She urged authorities to ensure justice for all those involved. This includes the capture and prosecution of the remaining suspects.
Lawmaker’s Background and Contributions
Mathen was appointed to the Council of States under the 2018 revitalized peace agreement. He represented the Other Political Parties (OPP). He replaced Malok Acuoth in this role.
During his tenure, Mathen chaired the Council of States’ specialized committee on education. Colleagues remember him as vocal, independent, and engaged in policy and constituency issues.
Motives and Reactions
Opposition SPLM-IO lawmaker Juol Nhomngek Daniel spoke about the incident. He stated that the motive for the killing remains unclear. No confirmed dispute has yet been linked to the attack.
Juol described Mathen as an active lawmaker. He was willing to challenge senior figures in parliament. These challenges included sports-related and community issues, but did not escalate.
According to Juol, Mathen supported education in his constituency. He assisted students, including helping one secure a scholarship. He used his position as chair of the education committee to do this.
Security Concerns and Institutional Weakness
Juol argued that the killing reflects institutional weaknesses in South Sudan. Lawmakers and government officials are vulnerable. They lack adequate state protection.
He questioned how government officials can represent the people without protection. He added that MPs across political affiliations face similar risks. Authorities have not released an official statement on the attackers or the motive. Investigations are ongoing.
