South Sudan: Hijacking Attempt on Aid Plane Foiled

THE AFRICA TIMES | SOUTH SUDAN —

WAU – An armed man has been arrested after an attempted hijacking. The incident involved a humanitarian aircraft operated by Samaritan’s Purse. The pilot successfully diverted the plane, landing in Wau on Tuesday.

The Caravan aircraft carried medicine for a mobile medical unit. It was en route to Maiwut in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State. Only the pilot and one staff member were on board at the time.

Attempted Hijacking Details

An armed individual attempted to seize control of the plane mid-flight. This event occurred on December 2, according to a statement released Thursday. The pilot managed to land the plane in Wau where authorities apprehended the suspect.

The National Security Service (NSS) took the armed hijacker into custody. The organization did not disclose the suspect’s identity. However, investigations are underway to determine the individual’s motives.

Official Statements

The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA) confirmed the plane’s diversion to Wau. The plane landed safely with no injuries reported. However, the SSCAA did not initially link the diversion to a hijacking attempt.

The SSCAA credited coordinated efforts for containing the situation. These efforts involved the flight crew, local airport authorities, and security agencies. The authority noted that details remained under investigation.

Investigation and Aftermath

Security sources indicate the diversion resulted from an attempt to force the plane towards Chad. The pilot reportedly regained control before landing safely in Wau. NSS operatives promptly arrested the suspected hijacker after the landing.

Authorities are conducting a joint investigation. Aviation and security agencies are working together to uncover the facts. They also seek to determine any necessary follow-up actions.

Humanitarian Mission

Samaritan’s Purse clarified the aircraft’s purpose. It emphasized the plane operates exclusively within Africa. The aircraft was delivering medical supplies on a humanitarian mission during the incident.

Authorities expect to release further updates as the investigation progresses. The incident raises concerns about security on humanitarian flights. It also highlights potential risks faced by aid workers in the region.
