South Sudan Healthcare Crisis: Strike Looms!

THE AFRICA TIMES | SOUTH SUDAN —

JUBA – Health workers in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are threatening to strike. The strike is planned for December 1 if demands are not met. Unpaid incentives total $306,000.

The workers also cite delayed salaries and medical supply shortages. These issues affect healthcare services.

Concerns Raised by Health Workers

Medics accuse the state government of neglecting its duties. The workers claim the government abandoned frontline staff. They cite 18 months of unpaid state incentives.

The incentives are valued at $17,000 per month. Workers also report delayed UNICEF incentives. Persistent shortages have crippled Aweil State Hospital.

Official Communication and Lack of Response

Staff members sent a letter to state officials. It details the challenges affecting the hospital. The letter claims that no response or solutions have emerged.

The lack of supplies interrupts essential services. It also erodes morale among healthcare workers. Workers continue to serve without timely pay.

Government Response and Authenticity of Claims

A source within the Ministry of Health questioned the letter’s authenticity. They claimed that some signatures were forged. However, the source acknowledged genuine concerns about delayed pay.

The Minister of Health and the Governor pledged to address the issues. They plan to meet with the workers before December 1.

Similar Issues in Warrap State

Warrap State faced a similar situation recently. Health workers at Kuajok Hospital also threatened to strike. Their concerns mirrored those in Northern Bahr el Ghazal.

James Ngor confirmed the incident in Warrap State. Ngor said that the state government met with the workers. They agreed to resume work after assurances.

Assurances and Future Actions

Staff were assured that UNICEF would be consulted. The consultation concerns the delayed incentives. Authorities acknowledged medicine shortages.

Authorities promised to collaborate with partners and the national government. They aim to ensure timely supplies. The government hopes to resolve the shortages soon.

Uncertain Future for Healthcare

Tensions are rising in both states due to these issues. It remains uncertain if these threats will prompt reforms. The reforms are needed to avoid a deeper crisis in the health sector.

The already strained healthcare system could face significant challenges. Urgent action is necessary to address these concerns.
