KUAJOK – Authorities in Kuajok are holding two individuals. These individuals are accused of attempting to set fire to a fuel station. Kuajok serves as the capital of Warrap State in South Sudan.
Attempted Arson at Fuel Station
The incident occurred at the Esther Costa Fuel Station around 8:00 PM on Thursday. A security guard noticed suspicious activity. Consequently, the guard alerted the police, preventing the arson attempt.
Details of the Incident
Officials from the Civil Defence Department reported the suspects’ possession of a matchbox. They allegedly tried using the matchbox to ignite fuel. The precise motive for this action currently remains undetermined.
Fire Safety Officer Kondok Madut Aloor noted the suspects actions. He stated that they were seen striking matches in a manner indicating intent to ignite a fire. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the reason behind the attempted arson.
Potential Impact of the Fire
Aloor emphasized the potential for disaster had the attempt succeeded. The neighbourhood surrounding the station is densely populated. Therefore, severe loss of life, injuries, and property damage could have occurred.
He further explained the rapid spread of fire within the congested town. It could have resulted in numerous casualties. Authorities are also investigating the motives of the individuals involved.
Rise in Fire-Related Incidents
This event follows a recent increase in fire-related incidents within Warrap State. Some incidents are linked to negligence, while others appear intentional. Children reportedly ignited shelters and shops at Kuajok Market last week, causing substantial losses.
House Fire in Aweil North County
In Aweil North County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, a woman has been detained. She is accused of burning her house after an argument with her husband. Investigations continue as officials report the complete destruction of household items.
Civil Defence Department’s Warning
The Civil Defence Department urges public caution, especially during the dry season. This is when fire outbreaks are more frequent. The department also warns against vigilantism. Residents are asked to report suspicious activities.
