Struggles with Sanitation in Nyando Sub-county
For over three decades, Eunice Akinyi Ila, 53, and her family endured substandard sanitation conditions in Kagola East village, Nyando Sub-county of Kisumu County. This family of seven shared a rudimentary mud-walled pit latrine and a makeshift bathing space.
During the rainy season, persistent flooding resulted in the collapse of traditional pit toilets, contaminating local water sources with raw sewage. As a result, residents resorted to using polluted water for drinking and domestic tasks.
Akinyi noted her frustration, explaining her efforts to construct seven toilets after repeated flooding caused their family latrines to be destroyed. She articulated the shame of having to redirect guests to neighboring latrines during visits.
