THE AFRICA TIMES | MALI — Bamako | April 5, 2025 — Legendary Malian guitarist and singer Amadou Bagayoko has died. Known globally as one half of Amadou & Mariam, he was 70. The Malian Ministry of Culture confirmed his death Friday. A Titan of African Music Bagayoko was born in Bamako in 1954. He became a towering figure in African music. He blended West African rhythms with rock, blues, and pop. He captivated audiences globally with his unique sound. He met Mariam Doumbia in the 1970s. They met at the Institute for Young Blind People in Bamako. Decades of Collaboration Their partnership spanned decades and stages worldwide. They became known as Amadou & Mariam. They achieved success as a duo. Their 2004 album, Dimanche à Bamako, was produced by Manu Chao. The album brought the duo international acclaim. It introduced their music to a wider audience. Their 2008 release, Welcome to Mali, earned a Grammy nomination. It was nominated in the Best Contemporary World Music Album category. These accolades further cemented their status. Global Recognition and Performances The duo opened for Coldplay on tour in 2009. They also performed at the Nobel Peace Prize concert. This was during Barack Obama’s award ceremony. They frequented major global festivals including Glastonbury. In 2006, they composed the official anthem for the FIFA World Cup. Their global recognition continued to rise. Tributes from the Music World Tributes poured in from across the music world. Manu Chao shared a heartfelt message about Amadou. He stated they would always be together. Senegalese music icon Youssou N’Dour also paid tribute. “I will never forget his friendship,” he said. He further stated his thoughts are with Mariam.
