BOR – Duk County in Jonglei State faces a critical shortage of essential medicines. This shortage endangers the lives of residents, especially children and pregnant women.

Critical Medicine Shortage in Duk County

The County Health Director, Mabior Dau Makur, expressed grave concerns. He cited a lack of funding as the primary cause. This has severely impacted the ability to provide basic medical services.

According to Dau, most primary health care centers lack vital medicines. Antimalarials, antibiotics, and pain relievers are critically low. Eight health facilities, previously supported by the John Dau Foundation, are now unsupported.

Impact on Health Facilities and Communities

The shortage, beginning earlier this year, affects multiple payams. Pagak, Mareng, and Kadiang are experiencing a rise in malaria cases. Health officials are mobilizing medicines where possible to aid vulnerable communities.

Funding cuts by the former U.S. President Donald Trump have exacerbated the crisis. These cuts affected numerous aid organizations. Dau appealed to the State Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and WHO for assistance.

Residents Voice Concerns

Local resident Majook Peter Nyuon highlighted the struggles of Padiet PHCC. This facility serves the populations of Padiet and Dongchak payams. It has faced funding interruptions for the second time in two years.

Nyuon noted that facilities in Duk County have faced repeated funding interruptions. These interruptions have affected local communities severely. Mobilized supplies are often insufficient which makes the need for assistance substantial

Calls for Urgent Intervention

Nyuon appealed to national and state governments for urgent support. He urged that international partners take action. Nyuon believes the Ministry of Health, Jonglei State Government, and UNICEF can intervene quickly.

Duk County struggles with flooding, poor infrastructure, and limited healthcare. Thousands rely on humanitarian support for survival. These factors intensify the impact of the medicine shortage.
