Malawi has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. This aligns with a growing international consensus favoring Moroccan territorial integrity. Malawi also supports Morocco’s autonomy plan for the disputed region.
Malawi’s Endorsement of Moroccan Sovereignty
George Thapatula Chaponda, Malawi’s Foreign Minister, communicated Malawi’s position to Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Chaponda called Morocco’s autonomy plan the “only credible and realistic solution” to the Sahara dispute. He further commended the United Nations’ mediation efforts.
Both ministers pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The ministers also noted the importance of Malawi’s Consulate General in Laâyoune. This enhanced cooperation is intended to reflect the ambitions of both heads of state.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Malawi and Morocco expressed satisfaction with their strengthened relations since 2017. Cooperation has increased in agriculture, fishing, mining, trade, and public finance. Both ministers also underscored the strong friendship between the two nations.
King Mohammed VI and President Arthur Peter Mutharika share mutual respect. Following discussions, plans for a new cooperation roadmap were announced. This roadmap aims to further invigorate the bilateral partnership.
The roadmap also supports increased coordination in regional and international forums. It should further strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
Growing International Support for Morocco
Malawi’s endorsement reflects a growing trend of international support for Morocco’s stance on Western Sahara. Several nations have shifted their positions to favor Morocco’s autonomy plan. This represents a significant change in the international approach to the conflict.
Shifting Positions of Global Powers
The United Kingdom officially endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan earlier this year. Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated the plan offers a pragmatic framework. This represents a shift from the UK’s previous position supporting self-determination without specifying a plan.
France officially expressed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2024. President Emmanuel Macron described Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most credible solution. French Culture Minister Rachida Dati also visited Western Sahara, inaugurating a French cultural center.
The United States recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in December 2020. Former President Donald Trump recently reiterated support for Morocco’s autonomy plan. He further confirmed plans to soon build a US consulate in the region.
Spain shifted its position in 2022, endorsing the Moroccan initiative as the most serious and realistic basis for resolving the dispute. Similarly, Portugal’s government expressed support for the autonomy plan. Portugal also distanced itself from the self-styled Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
