THE AFRICA TIMES | SOUTH AFRICA — The KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority (KZN T&FA) recently showcased its offerings. Emphasis was placed on positioning the province as a leading destination for filmmakers. The Authority participated at the Joburg International Film Festival in Gauteng. KZN T&FA at Joburg International Film Festival The festival served as a nexus for industry professionals from around the world. The aim was to foster collaboration and innovation in cinematic storytelling. KZN T&FA’s Chief Operations Officer, Jackie Motsepe, described her experience as electrifying. Motsepe noted the palpable enthusiasm among attendees. Many participants eagerly sought to learn new skills and forge connections. Discussions featured an array of international film leaders. Diverse Representation and Global Engagement The festival presented a diverse lineup of films. Contributions spanned Nollywood, Hollywood, and Canada, with a strong South African presence. Representatives from major international festivals also participated. Events such as the Toronto International Film Festival and the Hollywood Shorts Film Festival were present. These created a platform for global engagement. The event also spotlighted local narratives. Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards: Call for Entries The Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards announced its call for entries. Now in its 12th year, the awards continue to champion South African filmmaking. The submissions last year surged demonstrating increasing interest. The submissions rose dramatically from just over 100 to over 300. The awards employ a rigorous three-month judging process. This process helps to maintain fairness and integrity. Each entry undergoes evaluation by multiple expert panels. Following the evaluations, finalists are selected. The Awards ceremony will coincide with the Durban International Film Festival to maximize exposure. Celebrating African Storytelling The awards ceremony is scheduled for July. The Durban International Film Festival will coincide with the event. The 2025 edition will embrace the theme: ‘Africa’s Champions of Storytelling – From Piers to Pages’. The theme aims to celebrate the continent’s rich storytelling heritage. This also seeks to foster unity within African cinema. A key element of the awards is the pan-African category. The pan-African category provides a platform for filmmakers across the continent. It enables them to compete and gain international recognition. The Best Newcomer category will serve as a launching pad for emerging talent. Eligibility and Submission Details The KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority remains dedicated to nurturing talent. The body aims to boost both industry veterans and rising stars. The authority continues to reinforce the province’s status as a prominent filmmaking hub. Entrants must be South African citizens or permanent residents to be eligible. Productions need to include key creatives from KwaZulu-Natal. Co-productions are accepted if properly certified. Submissions are open across various categories, including feature films, short films, and documentaries. Eligible productions must have been broadcast, distributed, or screened between March 29, 2024, and March 27, 2025. The deadline for submissions is March 28, 2025.
