$10B Mega-Airport Takes Flight in Ethiopia

THE AFRICA TIMES | SUDAN — Ethiopian Airlines and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have finalized a $10 billion financing agreement. This initiative will establish a modern international airport in Bishoftu. The project signals a major advancement in African aviation infrastructure.

Financing and Key Stakeholders

The agreement was formalized Monday in Addis Ababa. The AfDB will coordinate the financing arrangements. High-ranking officials attended including Ethiopia’s Finance Minister Ahmed Shide. Ethiopian Airlines Group Board Chairman Lt. Gen. Yilma Merdassa, and AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina also attended.

Bishoftu Mega-Airport: Project Details

The Bishoftu Mega-Airport will develop in five distinct phases. It will include four runways and modern passenger terminals. Advanced cargo handling facilities are also planned. The airport aims to accommodate over 100 million passengers yearly. The facility spans approximately 3,975 hectares.

Boosting Capacity and Regional Role

Officials anticipate the project will significantly increase employment. It will also stimulate regional trade and tourism. The airport strengthens Ethiopia’s role in connecting Africa to global markets. It will enhance competition with major transit hubs globally. Ethiopia’s strategic location will be a key asset.
